Regulus Black sat alone at the Slytherin table in the great hall enjoying Tolstoy and a perfectly melty grilled cheese sandwich. For the first time in a long time he felt relaxed and in control of himself and his emotions. He smiled to himself, immensely thankful not to have to spend this particular holiday at Number 12. Internally, he debated the idea of going to go wish his brother a belated Merry Christmas. Normally he wouldn't have hesitated for a second to spend a mere moment with Sirius, but there was the issue of James Potter's constant presence around him. He let out a frustrated sigh and returned to War and Peace.

Regulus made no effort to hide his surprise. "You're shitting me."
This had to be some sort of trick.

"Not shitting you," he said sighing. "My parents are warm people." he just didn't think Regulus would ever take the offer up, and he didn't know what Sirius would think either.

He eyed the other carefully. "Why would you make that offer? You make it quite obvious how you feel about 'my kind'..." he trailed off, clearly referring to James' more than obvious feelings about Slytherins.

"Your kind? Your kind make it obvious about how you feel about Muggle-borns. Tell me Regulus, how do you feel about Muggle borns?" he said a little sharp.

Regulus shot James a look, clearly sick of all the pureblood assumptions. "I think a person's power comes from within. Doesn't matter if you can trace your blood back to Merlin himself. I prefer to pick my fights with specific people rather than just generalize a whole group. It's stupid and I refuse to sink to that level."

"Really?" he was kind of surprised. "Have a talk with Sirius and i'll see what I can do for you," he stood up and patted Regulus on the back.

Reglulus smiled a little. "I will," he paused for a moment, "You don't have to do this for me, you know."

"No, I don't." he pointed out. "But, I am. The great James Potter is full of surprises isn't he?" He only said that because he knew how Regulus thought of him.

Regulus laughed, genuinely this time. "He is indeed. Keep this up and I might just admit to being wrong about you, Potter."

"You are wrong about me," he grinned, than turned around and made his way up to the common room.
